Self-Help Itineraries - Bali Sample

We had a fantastic time in Bali! It is a beautiful island with super-friendly people, amazing things to see and do, and the food is to die for. We stayed for 10 nights but only covered three main areas, Ubud, Pemuteran and Seminyak. There is much more to explore.

1. Money:

At the time of our trip (March 2023), the exchange rate was about 1 USD for 15,000 Rupees. We exchanged money at the Singapore airport and got a good rate. We exchanged $300 USD for 4.5 million Indonesian Rupees. Our experience is that on Bali it is about 50/50, some people like cash however only exact amount of cash and others prefer card. We recommend exchanging money before arriving in Bali (always check the exchange rate). The lines at Bali airport were long for money exchange even though there were several.

2. Visa:

We arrived at the main Bali airport and stood in line to pay for your on-the-spot tourist visa (valid for 30 days, $35 per person, cash or card). Next line is for passport control (no need for passport pictures, although we brought some just in case). Then customs. This line was very busy and confusing. We were in line when we discovered that everybody else had a QR code. We left the line, found the QR code to scan (there are also I-pads available if your WiFi does not work) and we completed the customs forms on our cell phone (it was not completely clear if it was one per family or owner per person, so we both completed one and were waved through).

Activities, Accommodation and Entertainment

1. Hotel in Ubud – “The Sankara Suites & Villas by Pramana”

We splurged on this hotel a bit. It was 10 min outside of Ubud, although traffic in Ubud frequently made this a lot longer. The traffic in Ubud far exceeds the capacity of the Ubud roads. Had our own pool! There is another large, shared pool with bar. The room was really nice, clean, with a large bed and large wet area. They do room service, floating breakfast, and more. There is a spa too. The food at the restaurant was good. They can arrange excursions and transportation. Staff are super friendly.

2. Saraswati Temple

Interesting place and it’s beautifully kept. It’s an active temple. Lots of color and decorations across the structures/buildings. We were able to witness some of the ceremonies. No shorts allowed (need to wear sarong)

3. eBikes Bali – Ubud Cycling Tours

This was an AWESOME experience. Guide and support staff were amazing and very knowledgeable. They would stop traffic so we could safely cross the road! Lunch was at a local person’s home, which was a really nice experience. Saw beautiful rice fields! We stopped at the places listed below (see via e-bike tour) and loved each and every one of them!!

4. Tirta Empul Water Palace

The temple allows all visitors to partake in the purification ceremony. The ceremony consists of praying across 13 waterspouts with spring water. Loved this experience. Was part of the e-bike tour.
